so close redux
So, you may have been expecting some sunny, picturesque holiday shots, hey?
I was *this close* to making it to Bali, but unfortunately Mt Ruang had other ideas. The volcanic ash cloud that had grounded flights the week before shifted closer to Denpasar airport and on Thursday, it shut down the airport altogether.
You may have seen on the news stories of all the stranded people who's holidays have extended not in the best way; sleeping at the airport, running out of money, medication, annual leave...
As I was packing on Friday (for a 9am Saturday flight) and trying to remain optimistic, the email I'd been dreading came through. The organisers of the yoga retreat I was going to were stuck in Melbourne after their flights were cancelled and with no way of getting on another flight. They advised they had made the tough decision to cancel the retreat.
I just closed my suitcase and stared at it, numb. This trip was the first one I'd ever made solo and it was my "take-a-risk" trip, planned with the intent of trying to shake me out of my comfort zone and reclaim my independence, self-confidence and positivity after what has been a tough 9 months.
Once the initial shock passed I actually surprised myself with how well I took it. Yes, there was disappointment - of course. Who wouldn't be disappointed when at the eleventh hour a trip you've planned for, saved for, and finally got excited for, is cancelled? I had already begun to feel the warm tropical air on my skin and was looking forward to meeting new people and being immersed for a short time in another world.
The thought did pass through my mind "Why me? Why can't I get something good for once, for something to just go right?"
But I had an epiphany that came through so strong and clear, it actually floored me.
This didn't happen to me, it happened, There's a difference. This wasn't the Universe trying to punish me, it was just an incident of nature and in that instant; I was at peace with it. I immediately began to see all the other things that could open up for me by not going to Bali.
Thankfully, I have good insurance and it does cover natural disasters. I've been in touch with them and apart from a $250 excess, I think I'm covered. The retreat organiser have been amazing and helpful too. They immediately let us know they'd be refunding the workshop costs, but initially they didn't think they were going to be able to get the accommodation costs refunded and were advising us to add it to our insurance claim, however later in the day they sent another email advising they had been able to negotiate a nearly-full refund from the resort. Legends!
Garuda are giving full refunds on flights cancelled due to the ash cloud, so that's covered, and my return flight with Jetstar will be covered by insurance. So all in all, I really won't be out of pocket significantly, and the way I look at it I now have a healthy looking holiday fund, ready for the next trip.
Which I've decided will be Byron Bay in October, to help a dear friend celebrate her 40th. A week of hanging with a few women I simply adore, surfing, eating, drinking and relaxing. I might even squeeze in a bit of yoga.
Life. It ain't all bad.

Getting organised
Oh my, it's a busy time for me at the moment. I came home from work on Friday and was kinda hit with an overwhelming feeling of "how am I going to get all this done?!"
But of course, get done it must, so out came the whiteboard and tasks were sorted into sub-groups by priority. I'm pleased I've been able to work methodically through most of my to-do list, plus a few extras, and am now feeling a little more on top of it all as I head straight into another busy week.
The organisational spree has included the creative space and the greater home environment as well. My craft supplies and tools seem to have a habit of spreading themselves around all and every surface so getting them under control was first on my list.
A few weeks back, Laura from the KnitGirllls mentioned her method for keeping her circular needles organised on the podcast, and I thought hers was a really nifty idea. She uses an accordion file and stores them by size. When I was in Officeworks this week I picked myself up this stylish little one and sorted the huge tangle that was my needles straight into their relevant file. It's small enough to sit out of the way on my workstation, but in reach when needed.
While I was sorting needles, I also found this sweet vintage tin for my various dpn's. I have two needle cases that I made some time ago for my sock dpn's and they are very handy, especially if I'm taking them travelling, but they only fit so many sets and nothing over 20cm long, so this tin is perfect for the overflow.
I also reorganised my flat, and now have my sewing table set up permanently! I love having my sewing machine and overlocker ready to go. It makes sewing so much easier and a more frequent occurrence, when I don't have to clear the kitchen table and set up/pack up every time I want to do a quick sew-up.
Which is good, because I'm hoping to pick up lots of tips and sewing inspiration after my Craft Sessions Wiksten Tulip Skirt workshop. Another thing ticked off my list on Sunday - I got my fabric, interfacing and buttons! I also managed to get the pattern at a discount, using an Interweave coupon code I found online - huzzah!
I *may* have picked up some extra metres or two while I was there.
I've made some more progress on my Vedbaek shawl - onto the 8th repeat (of 9) so nearing the edging chart very soon. It's used way less yarn than I'd originally thought so far; it will be interesting to see how far the second skein goes now the stitch count is greatly increased. I'm anticipating getting it done with 400m though (unless the edging chart chews through meterage like a barracuda!). Photos next week...
Sadly, I don't think my Nightingale Vest will be finished in time to wear to the Craft Sessions, though. But that's OK - I'll take it along and hopefully get a row or two in on Saturday night. It's looking beautiful so far though, and there will hopefully be an FO next week!!
So that was my week. I feel a lot more in charge of things this side of the weekend, and can see a clear path ahead through the next few weeks to come. If you're going to the Craft Sessions, hope to see you there! Otherwise, see you all next week and until then - happy creating :)

While I was sorting all the needles, I took the opportunity to clear out some of the old needles that I'll probably never use again. I'm a bit (a lot) of a magpie, and I can't let go of things easily even if I have plenty. I'm hoping they are just what someone is looking for at the opshop though.

I'm really pleased with fabric, and I love the buttons! Options for fabrics are pretty limited down my way, and I did struggle a bit to find a print I liked in an appropriate fabric, but finally settled on this and I think it's a good choice. It's a mid-weight cotton and I can see it being a very wearable and versatile skirt. The buttons are actually slightly translucent, which isn't really showing up in the photos, and with their opaque cream dots, they sit really well on the fabric.

The fortnight in which Kylie was super productive
So productive, she forgot to blog last week - oops!!
I finished off some lingering knitting projects...
Climb socks (samples for the shop)
Anklets - these are samples for the upcoming sock workshop I'm teaching at Sunspun in October. Very exciting times, to be able to share my passion for handknit socks, and my own pattern, with other knitters in this format!
Both socks are knit using Naturally Waikiwi sock yarn, which is a blend of Merino, Alpaca, Nylon and Possum. It's a really sturdy but soft yarn, and noticeably warmer than some other sock yarns I've worked with.
I frogged some old FO's that just weren't right, including my Whisper. Which means I now have 200g thereabouts of beautiful Madtosh fingering weight to play with.
I'm leaning towards a Halligarth, by Gudrun Johnston. What do you think?
I may have also purchased some more yarn...
Jitterbug "Caramel" (top) and "Paintbox" (bottom), because everyone knows sock yarn doesn't count as stash.
I've also cooked up a storm...
- lentil, bacon and vegetable soup
- country chicken casserole, in the slow cooker (yum)
- zucchini slice, a near-weekly standard in this house
- apple and oat crumble
- san boy chow
- beef chilli, another slow cooker recipe
- mandarin and poppyseed muffins
- Spicy chickpea and eggplant tagine
- Vietnamese Pork ball noodle soup
It's perfect weather for soups and casseroles, but I'm often out too late to make them each evening, so this should keep the freezer stocked for a while.
Then I planted more herbs, succulents and natives out into our backyard, as things were looking a little bare after the end of the tomatoes and other seasonals, and I tidied up wardrobes and cupboards inside.
I've caught up with loads of friends - Uni friends, knitting friends, old work friends, and roller derby friends - which has been wonderfully rejuvenating! I really miss seeing all these people on a daily basis, but it's hard to fit everything in, isn't it?
As tiring as the thought of being super busy can be, sometimes I need a little push to get out and make time to do things I enjoy and that nourish me. I've found I'm actually more energised and the creative ideas and motivation has been on a high, simply by making myself tick things off my list (after making a priority list, mostly that didn't include household chores!).
Anyway, hope you're all having a great week and have had an equally productive time of it.

making plans
I’m currently finishing up my 2013 projects, putting to bed
a year in knitting and spending some time both reflecting on the year that was,
and beginning to make plans for the year ahead.
I've been thinking about how much I've enjoyed my little personal challenge of 24 projects in 12 months, and have decided to set some more such challenges for 2014.
I've been thinking about how much I've enjoyed my little personal challenge of 24 projects in 12 months, and have decided to set some more such challenges for 2014.
I’m at that delicious stage of the planning process where every project on my list is exciting me, and I keep finding even more new and wonderful things to add!
Firstly, I know in 2014 I want to work on pieces that form a
collection, rather than a more random, individual project methodology. Accessories and garments that come together
to compliment both each other and my existing wardrobe pieces.
A Year in Sweaters by
Season
I've loosely put together the idea of working in
seasons. The aim of this set is to pick
4 garments that relate in some way to the season they are to be finished by –
be it in a design attribute, a gauge, a yarn…
Peasy cardigan, using Rowan
Felted Tweed DK in Seasalter. Such a
versatile pattern and yarn/colour – I have tons to wear this with, from dresses
to skirts, to jeans and shorts. Perfect
transitional wear, in my opinion
Miette
cardigan, using Cascade 220 worsted in Yakima Heather to wear with a cute little mint coloured floral dress, tights and cowboy boots!
Fieldwork cardigan, using
Berroco Ultra Fine Alpaca in Redwood Mix.
This colour looks fabulous with a lavender top I have, and I can see it with
cuffed jeans and Converse.
Hexacomb cardigan, using Louisa
Harding Ianthe in Raffia. An oldie of a
pattern, but still very relevant to my wardrobe, with its slightly vintage styling. The ¾ sleeves and wool/cotton blend will make
it a lovely little summer cardigan for sunfrocks and skirts.
Showtime
In this set, I’m putting a concentrated effort into making
pieces for Show competitions in 2014, starting with the Red Hill Show in March,
then Bendigo Sheep & Wool in July, and finishing with the Royal Melbourne
Show in September. They will hopefully
also work back with the Seasonal pieces, so I'm thinking they will mainly be accessories and homewares.
At this stage, I’m still working out which pieces I want to
enter in which show, but I do know that I definitely want to attempt a lace-weight
baby shawl for the Royal Melbourne. I want
to make an heirloom piece for Lily, and I’ve found a couple of great shawl
patterns (one is even named “Lily”!)
I know I am going to see things, new things, throughout the
year that I am going to Have. To. Knit straight away, so I’m trying to leave
enough leeway within my planning to accommodate this spontaneous aspect
too. As much as I do enjoy my little
quests and challenges, I think I’ve established that it’ really important to me
within my craft to have some freedom to just cast on and work away on a
whim. So I’m also setting the additonal
goal of an accessory a month – free choice!
(Free choice, but I’m naturally I'm already making lists, hahaha!!)
Oh, and the Gingko Crescent shawl is finally cast on ;)
