I've also wanted to try the afterthought heel for a while, so I cast on some Opal Petticoat just to use it up...
I have never really loved this wool, nothing about the texture (crunchy), or the patterns/colours really appeals, but I do have the odd random skein in my stash and well, one must use up the stash, y'know?
All that said, I don't *hate* this colourway...it will be fine for "boot socks"

You have been busy with socks! Good luck with the afterthought heel.
Oh, your blog is leaving me so wistful for the days when I could knit obsessively. BTW, I am also a derby girl (retired, unfortunately).
Thanks for stopping by my blog! I just subscribed to yours, too!
I rarely knit 8ply socks, and I don't know why that is! They are so quick and lovely!
I'm not a huge fan of knitting with Opal, but it really does wear well. I must try an afterthought heel sometime too. Maybe I should pull out some of my Opal or Regia!
I agree with RoseRed, they are so quick. I can knit one a day and have a pair in no time flat. Your socks are nice. I think Opal is very serviceable, but not a special occasion sock wool.
